What are thoughts if the length of an normal anime episode is increased from 23 minutes to 45 like most western shows.

Discussion

I personally would love it. Currently in the normal episode of 23 minutes, almost 5 minutes consists of OP and ED and combine that with flashbacks then we barely get to see anything. Another thing is that most anime make only 12 or 13 episodes per year. So we are getting only 3-4 hours of our favorite anime to watch per year(not to mention some anime takes more than a year to air like OPM ). I really think a 40+ minute normal episode would be cool as we can see much more. Who doesnt love more of their favorite anime?

I'd feel bad for all the poor animators who'll end up karoshi'd.

Isn't most western animation the same length though?

Hell most of them are often times shorter. I think spongebob had like 12 minute episodes.

To be fair new cartoons are consistent though. A lot of anime you have to wait a long time for a new season.

Really? I swear they usually take 1-2 years for new seasons, like look at South Park and rick and morty. Also gotta keep in mind their animation quality is way lower.

South park is yearly I think and Rick and morty has some problems with the writers or something. A lot of cartoons gets new episodes in less than a year but those ones are usually not as good and for kids.

The 45-50 mins format of western TV series is actually what makes me avoid them, so absolutely no from my part, too long for me.

If you had longer episodes... you'd get less of them.

way too much weekly work...animation takes time to make

This used to be quite common back in the 80s and 90s with the OAV scene. Usually it would be 3-6 episodes but there are quite a few at 12 episodes. The problem is that they would be released once a month, if not more spaced out. Of course they generally had a higher animation quality too but even so you just can't do 40 minute episodes on a week to week basis in the current industry climate. The animators can only work so many hours a day!

You do realize that making anime isn’t free, right? Anime is incredibly expensive and time-consuming to make. Changing the normal episode length to 45 minutes would nearly double the cost and workload for the studios. The last thing we need is more karoshi or employee suicides.

The average animation quality in a seasonal anime is already bad enough, this would just reduce it to completely still frames.

i would probably give up on anime and go for the source, the length is a big part of why i dont watch more western stuff.

That's how it was for Katanagatari and I have to say I wasn't a fan.

No thanks. I like anime episodes being the length they are. It's less of a commitment and easier to find time to sneak in an episode.

The reason OP and ED are there in the first place is because Tezuka can't animate enough to fill in the time slot (which interestingly, turned into a culture of sort with the added benefit of promoting songs and credit roll)

I personally would love it.

Go try out Hellsing Ultimate, those episodes last 40-50 minutes.

I really think this isn't gonna work with the way the anime industry works. Making an anime takes a lot of time (2 - 3 years from the start of the planning to airing on TV) and often the production committees wants them out as soon as possible, meaning that scheduels for animators are often terrible.
