AITA for not going to the funeral of my childhood best friend's father?
This happened a few years back.. still think about it sometimes, and feel pretty guilty about it. The father of my ex best friend died of cancer almost 2 years ago. I was shocked and devastated to hear the news ofcourse. We were friends for 8 years. (4 to 12) We were playing at her house when we were kids, even was there when her parents got a divorce. Her father was pretty weird as in he drank a lot and had anger issues. So he used to scare me a little. Alltough he was mostly nice and I am still sad he is gone.
I did not go to the funeral because, first of all, I had already something else planned with bf that day and hadn't seen him for a while,
And second, she totally left me when we got around high school time. She got new friends, I got bullied. She forgot about me completely. I really had a hard time losing her like that. And I did also base my decision not to come a little on this.
We grew a part. Still we work at the same job so we didn't really lose contact, we were just kind to each other. Not more or less. My mom told me everyone was there at the funeral. My dad, my brother, all the colleagues, her friends. My mom reminds me about it a lot. "But you were not there, while you were good friends." I feel pretty guilty about it still. I still gave her my condolences and donated 5 euros for a donation thing for her, to make things right.
But should I have been there? AITA?
