Current snow conditions for hiking
Hi all! I’ll be spending some time in Tahoe City next weekend with a small group, and we’d love do some hiking (or snowshoeing, as appropriate). However, I know we’ll have to take the heavy snow year into account when selecting hikes and making sure we’re prepared.
I’m looking for a couple of 3-6 hour hikes, maybe something in the neighborhood of 8-12 miles, with elevation gain up to the 2-3k range. So far, I have my eyes on the following, but I’d love to hear other ideas:
Eagle Lake area. Plan to go up beyond Eagle Lake, either going to Velma Lakes or making a loop using the Bayview Trail.
Twin Peaks/Stanford Rock area. Looking at taking the Tahoe Rim Trail from Ward Creek, heading up to Twin Peaks, and coming down past Stanford Rock to make a loop.
I’m guessing that we should expect heavy snow cover on these routes, given that they both involve travel at 8000-9000 ft . If so, would it be prudent for us to rent some snowshoes?
I’d very much appreciate any info from folks who know the current conditions!
