Finding housing when you don't live in the region?

How are you guys managing it? I'm moving 1600 miles, I can't exactly visit every apartment, and student housing simply isn't an option for me.

Obviously there are roomshare and apartment finding websites but that doesn't really solve the "moving hundreds of miles to an unfamiliar region" issue.
