When expanding a volume (SHR1) does the shared data remain accessible?

I am looking to expand my 6Tb SHR1 volume (2x3Tb WD Reds) with another 2 WD Reds.

Will the shared data still be accessible on my network? If not, how long is the expansion likely to take?

Thank you for your time :)

Data remains accessible during volume expansion.

Takes about 24-36 hours depending on the Syno model.

It is a DS918+ and I have about 2.1Tb of data on it

2TB of data? Shouldn't take long to expand volume.

Note: Start the expansion with both new drives plugged in.

As stated by others the shared data remains accessible during volume expansion. My expansion from 3x4TB HGST Deskstar NAS (SHR-2) to a 4th HGST Deskstar NAS took about 4-5 days and that was with giving priority to RAID resync.

You can find that setting in Storage Manager -> Storage Pool -> Configurations. Not sure, if changing this affects an already running resync or if you need to set this beforehand. Please note that setting this to "Resync faster" (as I did) will impact the responsiveness of your NAS. I mainly noticed that during a directory tree comparison between my PC and the NAS. Reading and writing files seemed to go almost as fast as without it. I've since then set this back to "Lower impact", since I don't care how long periodic data scrubbing takes.

I started the expansion (with both disks on) last night. It was up to 2% after a few hours and I could still access my shares. Pretty awesome really.

Thank you all for your advice

You can adjust the speed in the Storage Manager so when you're not using it you can make it go faster. Didn't make a huge difference when I tried it for an expansion recently but it definitely went faster

For anyone else reading this, the expansion went smoothly, it took about 5 days to complete and all shared data remained accessible throughout.
