Hi, you've made the same mistakes as ive pointed out here; https://old.reddit.com/r/FinalFantasyTCG/comments/bhb48l/3_more_budget_lists_for_new_players/?st=jvcox8d8&sh=f670332e
Youre running too many backups, 18 is overkill, especially because none of your backups has the ability to break itself and has no special abilities. The ex burst count is also very low. And where is Duncan?
Can you please outline your objections to my views and list in a more detailed manner so that new players can benefit from the discussion?
I appreciate your feedback. Thanks for wanting to help the community.
I'll give a bit more detailed feedback, at least regarding the backups listed here. The deck is "fine" for a true beginner, but only if they understand how to use it and what they need to pitch. 3 copies of each backup means that you'll see the same backups very consistently, but it's only 6 different cards, 5 of which are unique so you can't actually play out more than 1 copy. You also have no breakable backups or ways to break your backups (e.g. opus 6 Kuja), so once you hit 5 backups you have up to 13 dead cards you can draw (about 30% of the deck by that point). There's also no way to really filter any of these out except for Meeth, who might filter out a single backup per game to find a forward instead.
I generally prefer being at 17 backups at most, and that's playing control (I ran 16 backups in mono water all last opus). There's also no talk of why you would want 2 of a card instead of going at a full 3 of for everything. I acknowledge that teaching new players how to pick and play 1-ofs is a bit advanced for a newbie guide, but I certainly wouldn't want 3 Edgar, Ysayle, or GE Cid in this list (at least without also running O6 Kuja or O7 Lulu).
Thank you for your feedback. I tend to be a heavy advocate of consistency and would never cut a core card lke Edgar, Setzer, and Cid from this backup line. I also think cutting Sage would probably be silly. Where you can cut backups from this list is Meeth and Ysayle, but the point of the article was how to think about deck construction and to stay away from what I would consider to be a somewhat advanced topic. I think a good edit to the deck would be running O6 Kuja as a way to break backups. That would still keep the deck simple.
I'd argue that there's a difference in philosophy for what makes the core valuable. Edgar isn't necessarily important in every matchup, and even though Cid is he's fine to not draw early since you may want to hold him until you need to search for something unless you have Kuja to be able to search more than once. I'd say the same for Setzer if he didn't ex burst so extra copies aren't dead. On the flip side, with 18 backups I feel like filtering and selection is even more important which is why I didn't suggest cutting Meeth. In your refined list you also have multiple breakable backups, which makes ridding backups from your hand less important.
When I play 3-ofs for my backup line, they're cards that I want to see every game, and that I want to see early or multiple times. Back to mono-water, the only 3-ofs I've ever considered are Yuna and Scholar, maybe Wakka. I have ice/water and earth/wind decks that have both been successful, but the only 3-of backups in the those are Edward in the former and Semi/Star Sybil/Moogle XI in the latter. But they also all have 5-6 backups that are one-ofs, which isn't good to bring up in a beginner guide.
Here is the somewhat more refined list that I have been playing in tournaments with good success.
I would need to make a whole "how to deckbuild" blog about that, and im not feeling all the typing tbh :P But i am up for talking you through personally on discord or w/e what to look for when making a deck as in the theme and the balance.

Why Duncan?
Good synergy with Sabin and he's FFVI.
Duncan is imo one of the few reasons fire/ice works better now than it did last opus. Way better card than most people's first reactions, and it's pretty easy for his special to 9-10k something.
Do you have any deck lists with him in it? I don’t have any of him, but I can’t wrap my head around him being worth it. I’d rather play Sabin than use him to deal damage from the S ability.
The above link is a general guide for building decks. Hope this helps new players.
