Hi, I'm doing a survey on Gambling in Video Games

Discussion

Because of the recent debacle about the US senator who wants to ban lootboxes, I decided to make my big project about gambling in Video Games.

I was told that the FGO community is heavily whales, so I'd like to know your thoughts on the subject!

Do I tick the column that states I spent money on loot boxes if I only spent on gacha games? I know they are related, but I’ve never really spent on “lootbox” games.

Technically whales still comprise of a very small fraction of FGO. A good portion of the playerbase are dolphins though, since those who are typically F2P will be motivated to spend on the GSSR, which happens twice per year

If you've only spent on Gachas, don't tick yes on lootboxes. I've seperated lootboxes and gachas for that reason.

Might want to raise up the gatcha spending buckets. $200+ is 1 banner for some players.

Also, you have several answer choices that are pretty similarly (ie show appreciation for dev, encourage dev and support dev)

Yeah, I am considering making a second survey that focuses on Gachas and Mobile games like FEH, FGO and Clash that asks more related to the topic of those types of games.

That will shift the focus to mobile games and the gacha system and not just retail games with lootboxes wouldn't it?

I feel like there could be some more specific questions to get a better feel of how people view lootboxes/gacha games, but I'm not sure how exactly you're compiling this stuff lol. Especially with the essay-style questions.

But hey, looking forward to see what you think about what people say.

Edit: Also going to say I didn't really feel like there was any sort of leading bias to these questions (usually surveys like these on this sort of topic tend to subtly imply in their questions what side of the issue they're on) so props for that.

If I can make a suggestion maybe ask about how much you spend per month on gacha games, from my time looking through other peoples surveys and research a large portion of "p2p" players spend consistently per month, maybe something along the lines of "How much do you spend a month:"

-21-50

-51-100

One thing I never liked about the "how much do you spend per month" question is that for some whales, it depends entirely on what banners are up. For example for me, if there are a couple of banners in a row in FGO that I have no or little interest in, then I'm not going to be spending much money if at all during those times. But all of a sudden if someone like Kama or Melt appears, I'm going to be whaling hard in that banner.

I'd say something more like "how much are you willing to spend/have spent on a gacha banner before?" would be a better question.

Yeah alot of people summon on different stuff for different reasons so it is hard to have accurate questions for everyone anyway. He could also take into account things like guaranteed 5 star banners and how they affect f2p players and coerce them to spend.

I'd say the best option would be to determine a rough monthly average.

If you spend $1000 on the game after playing for four months, you'd fall into the $201-$500 bucket (even if all of it was spent in a single month).

I'm planning on making another survey, one that covers more mobile game/gacha style games slightly more in depth.

Per month makes sense because i long hit over 200 over the 4-5 years on fgo.

Just done it. Good luck! It's still in the proposal stage but my final year project is going to be on a similar topic. Probably put one up in August.

If it's not too much to ask, could you show us the results of your research when it's done?

Edit: out of curiosity, what were your proposed hypotheses/research questions for the survey?

Edit2: I see you haven't hit Granblue yet. You may get interesting results from them thanks to the game's suptix system.

I will have a full spreadsheet of all of the data I've collected, so I plan on releasing a report about the data as soon as that's done.

As for hypothesis, my hypothesis was that "gambling in video games can lead to a gambling addiction", so I'm covering gambling-esque modes in various video games.

Wait, is there a distinction in this survey between lootboxes and gacha? I filled up the lootboxes question with answers regarding my experience playing FGO (a gacha game), then realized the same questions were being repeated for gacha games later

Gachas are built AROUND the lootbox aspect, Lootboxes appear in almost all retail games as a side aspect.

How much money have you spent on the gacha?

IMHO, if this is whole amount of money that was spent on the gacha, you should add 1-2 zeros.

I did end up making a second survey and adding a few zeros on the end but if I start to see large numbers, my worry will be massive.

Why would what other people spend make you worry?

Sure, some people are mentally screwed up and value sprites in FGO over food/rent/etc and they sleep on a couch.

However, some people have enough extra money to burn that they could drop 10k a month into FGO and still live better than average.

You can't use 'money spent' as a measure.

LOL, worry not. There's many people that play FGO since 2015/2016, so overall they could invest a lot of money. E.g. I don't think about myself as whale, but in those ~3 years that I play FGO I spended around 4000$.
