side chaining

So if I side chain my kick to my bass in an attempt to remove some mud isn't my kick then going through all the eq and fx on that cannel as well? I'm a little confused on how that works any feedback is appreciated, thank you.

and only some plugins let you use side chain feature? or i guess like a limiter would do it automatically when the signal hits the db level

not that I think about it I can use a empty bus, idk haha, what's your work flow look like?
