My review about 3K so far ( if anyone is even interested lmao )
Title already states it, after the first hours and days i thought i'm gonna post my opinion on the game so far, maybe there will be tons of comparisons with Warhammer 2 since thats my most played and favorite TW so far.
First of all: Campaign/Campaign Map
I think you can't really say against the step up for the campaign, my first campaign so far has been in romance mode, so i can't talk about the records mode.
3K improves a mechanic i loved about the Warhammer games in this mode, the generals and heroes being unique and strong single units in battles and on the campaign map. I liked creating new characters in my campaigns, kinda doing some RPGing. 3K combines that with the old Marriage system, and additionally with the completely overhauled diplomacy system.
The diplomancy system overhaul is probably the most needed thing in the Total War games, as a Warhammer 2 fan, even after hundreds of hours i still had no clue how the diplomacy actually properly works xD
I love the new alliances and coalitions especially.
The only 2 things which are bothering me:
The amount of news of political decisions/deaths/new faction leaders. I think after just 1 hour i kinda lost track who is fighting against who and which factions have a bond. The amount of of notifications you get is a bit too much i think.
The playstyle of the different factions so far haven't been that different than the factions in Warhammer 2 in my opinion, the difference between playing the High Elves and the Beastmen for example, i cant feel anything close to this in Three Kingdoms, but im still far from really seeing every Faction in this game, so i wouldn't take this as firm opinion yet.
The new building/city system is also pretty good in my opinion. It's nothing too big but i like it.
Campaign map battles/sieges:
I like that it doesnt take 15 turns anymore to successfully siege a city. It was way too long in my opinion.
Which is really enjoy is that you, as attacker, also need to take a look at the supplies of your army that is besieging the city, which makes the siege a bit more interesting and gives you a reason to not only take a look at the siege to see how many turns the next siege equipments need to be done.
Live Battles:
I'm still not sure how i rate them, it is a historical Total War, so i guess nobody expected the variety of a Warhammer when it goes to Units and factions.
But after playing so many hours of Warhammer 2 , i still gotta say i enjoyed the Warhammer live battles by a huge amount more than 3K.
Unit variety feels nearly non existent when being used to Warhammer 2. In my first live battles i actually really lost track of whats happening and what units are fighting against each other, since i couldnt properly see the difference without clicking on them.
Of course every faction/general has some sort of traits like better/stronger cavalry or similar stuff, but it still feels bland.
I like the 3 generals in armies now, in general i have nothing against seeing the type of army compositions now ( like i said, i love the unique heroes/generals as single units ).
To summarize it, for me 3K is a really good step up for the Total War series, the diplomacy system and the campaign mode really needed some new mechanics/an overhaul . I wish to see them in Warhammer 3/the next fantasy total war.
If i would recommend buying 3 Kingdoms? For fans of historical Total Wars 100% / For people that mainly play campaign mode definetly a 100% aswell/ general Strategy game fans also 100%/ People who like some sort of RPGing with their characters like it started in Warhammer def a 100% rec aswell.
For Fans of Total War who have their main focus on the live battles and diversity? I wouldnt give it a recommend, if you prefer epic and diverse live battles i would definetly recommend buying/staying at Warhammer 2.
At the end this is all a matter of opinions, but in general i still think 3 Kingdoms is one of the best Total Wars in the series. It definetly takes the weaknesses of the Warhammer games (diplomacy/campaign story/ general campaign map) and turns it into it's strengths. But it sadly doesnt take over the strengths of Warhammer 2 completely ( Live battle and unit diversity/ aswell as faction diversity)
