##So, what exactly is a replication?

A replication can best be defined as the act of intentionally recreating the subjective effects which are experienced under the influence of hallucinogens from a "first person" vantage point AS ACCURATELY AS POSSIBLE. This can be through the creation of images, video and audio. It serves the useful purpose of formally documenting certain experiences in a level of detail which descriptive language and written analysis could not possibly come close to by itself. However, it is also worth noting that posts which are simply a discussion of replication-related topics are not only very much allowed, but also highly encouraged!

If you are still confused, you can find examples of subjective effects which can be replicated as listed below. A replication may act to isolate one of these effects or may seek to combine many separate effects to create a complete representation of a given psychoactive experience as a whole. Either is acceptable. Alternatively, check out the most upvoted submissions to this subreddit here to get a general sense of the type of content we are looking for.

Much of the original content here is created using the aid of digital media manipulation software or algorithms found in programs such as Photoshop, After Effects, or Audacity. In order to generate as accurate a portrayal as possible. You can find tutorials on how to use these programs effectively by clicking the "tutorial" flair sort in the sidebar. Google and YouTube are also excellent resources to help you get started as well.

##What isn't a replication?

  • drug-inspired artwork that may capture the essence of the experience, but does not seek to precisely & exactly emulate it
  • trippy music videos, unless they replicate the experience
  • most unintentional videos of unrelated things such as this, this, and this
  • something you haphazardly threw a bunch of photoshop filters on top of
  • optical illusions
  • most deepdream and neural network generated content, particularly when it has not been edited
  • glitch art
  • cartoons or most hand-drawn artwork

Before you post, ask yourself the following:

Is the work that I am posting here as accurate an emulation of a hallucinogenic experience as possible? Is it merely hallucinogen/drug inspired artwork or perhaps a video of something unrelated that simply reminds you of tripping but does not effectively capture the subjective side of the experience?

Please note this subreddit is for posting replications only. For other art, post in r/drugart, r/heavymind, r/deepdream or r/psychedelicartwork.

##What can be replicated?

Any visual or auditory effect which is induced by a hallucinogen can potentially be replicated. Please study our comprehensive list of individual effects that is listed below. This breaks down each effect into formalized descriptions, leveling systems and potential variations in style while also including a wide variety of example replications.

Enhancements - Acuity enhancement, Colour enhancement, Pattern recognition enhancement, Magnification

Suppressions - Acuity suppression, Double vision, Pattern recognition suppression

Distortions - After images, Colour replacement, Colour shifting, Depth perception distortions, Diffraction, Drifting, Environmental cubism, Object alteration, Perspective distortion, Recursion, Scenery slicing, Symmetrical texture repetition, Tracers, Visual haze,

Geometry

Hallucinatory states - Autonomous entity, External hallucination, Internal hallucination, Object activation, Perspective hallucination, Transformations, Settings, Shadow people, Unspeakable horrors

Auditory effects - Auditory distortion, Auditory enhancement, Auditory hallucinations, Auditory suppression

Miscellaneous - Visual disconnection, Synaesthesia, Machinescapes

It's important to note that this list is still in progress and far from complete; we welcome suggestions for new components or updated descriptions and encourage all of you to help us in documenting that which has never before been documented. For more components and descriptions such as cognitive, physical or auditory effects, please see our official subjective effects index.

Subreddit Etiquette

When posting a replication, it is preferable although not required to use standardized terminology by referring to the effect/s within it by their given names. This helps all of us come to a greater understanding of the hallucinogenic experience by creating a universal vocabulary which can be used by all of us to discuss the ineffable in a greater level of detail. You can find a full list of terminology at EffectIndex.com.

Please keep in mind that simple drifting replications produced by software such as plotograph with no other accompanying effects are currently banned on a case by case basis for the time being. This is because while many plotographs and other simple drifting animations are still often genuinely good replications that do accurately represent a specific subtype of drifting (usually texture flowing), they are still degrading the quality of the content within this community as they extremely easy to make and have therefore been spammed relentlessly for the past year or so. For some examples of what we mean by this, please see the top posted submissions on this subreddit here.

Before posting a replication that you did not make, please make sure to use the search bar to check that what you are posting hasn't already been posted beforehand. In order to keep clutter to a minimum, reposts of any sort will not usually be tolerated, and as such, will probably be removed. Moreover, we do not accept requests for replications to be posted here; such posts will also result in prompt removal. The reason for this is that the subreddit becomes spammed by these requests when they are allowed. Instead, consider looking into producing your own OC (original content)-- it's fun and absolutely encouraged!

Lastly, please honor the fact that trying to visually replicate a trip is difficult. Trying to make an animation that replicates a trip is even more difficult. Respect the hard work that the creators of these replications have done, even if you don't agree that they are 100% representative. We're not here to bash people's work. If you would like to give it a shot, feel free to submit your replication work here :) Everyone trips differently. Don't hate if you can't relate.

NOTE: If you have any comments or suggestions for all of this, please feel free to comment
