Volunteer, meet ups, groups?

I'm a single mom and well fairly new to Providence. It's been challenging to make new friends and I'm hoping someone can recommend any activities or volunteering, something where I can meet and make friends. I'd really like to have a community here for my son and I. Help? FYI my son is 4
