Looking For Food and Heartworm Reco's
Hi there,
I have 2 seven year old V's and last weekend we had a bit of an episode with my female, Penelope. While at the lake in 90 degree weather, she was playing for about 30 mins before seeming disoriented and then collapsing. We rushed her to the ER and they did x-rays and found that her heart was enlarged and had fluid in the pericardial sac. They drained 6 oz of blood from the sac and she stabilized. Yesterday we saw a cardiologist who took a good look at her heart with sonogram equipment and saw nothing to be concerned about (no tumors thankfully). She did however strongly recommend that we switch them off of grain-free food. There are lots of links between grain-free foods and heart diseases that have popped up in the last 2 years so we want to be precautious. We have been feeding them Taste of the Wild for about 3 years, which has ingredients like legumes and potatoes instead of corn or wheat. We were on grain-free because of an allergy my male had shown.
What food do you all feed your Vizslas?
Also, we have not been giving them pills for heartworm protection because trifexis was causing seizures in my male dog. Does anyone else have experience with this? We use holistic insect repellant sprays to keep the bugs away for now but would love to find a more solid holistic solution to protect against heart worms.
Thanks in advance for your input!
