Question - Rewiring Basement Lights to Switch
Hey there r/electricians!
I am by no means an electrician at all, but I am looking to do a project at home and would like to confirm or be corrected.
My house is from 1967, and the basement has two lines that go through to my laundry/boiler/work area of the basement. This area has four pull-string lights that I would like to switch out for two larger LED work lights and route through a single switch. The only issue is that I believe that the other plugs in this area of the basement are on the same circuit. This is the logic that I have:
- follow the circuits "upstream" to see where they enter the work area
- Shut off the main power to the house completely & confirm with multimeter
- Separate the circuit and add a junction box, placing the outlets on one line and route the other line to the new switch I am installing, then to each junction box that I will place along the open joist ceiling for the two lights
Is that logic sound? I am planning to run new romex 12/2 and use the correct red wing nuts to join the wires and electrical tape. Is there any specific junction box that I need to use? I do understand that I will need a junction box at any splice or connection; I will not have loose wire connections, and I won't be hiding any boxes or pretending they aren't there. What am I missing in this endeavor?
