Just a final update for those of you who were following along with this (thanks again btw!). We got our second ultrasound results back and everything is normal, white cell count is back to normal, temp is normal, etc.

Based on the vet's research, it's not unusual for enlarged lymph nodes at his age (just turned 2 last week!) so we were just unlucky that we got the bacterial infection at the same time. We would have likely been fine with the initial antibiotics, if we had just been able to get them into him.

Lessons for next time, check the temp early and often. If it's going up, go to the vet early.

Otherwise, he's all back to normal save for a shaved belly! Just in time for his 2nd birthday
