Help with mid game downward spiral

My early game feels solid, but about the time you get the entire middle of the asteroid built out and have to start venturing further to progress, it feels like I always enter a downward spiral I never recover from.

Its like I'm constantly digging mineshafts for resources. A lot of them just for metal so I can keep building. But it takes so long to build out and haul all the metal that by the time one is done, I'm starting another mine shaft for something else until my dup's are on the verge of mutiny. I know there's a lot of tech to help with hauling, toxic enviornments, and travel, but I can never get to it before my colony suffers death by mineshaft.

Anyone else have this problem and figure out what they were doing wrong?
