Moving Company Problems - Need Advice

Ask CHI

I recently hired a company to help me move. Most of the items were/are being moved into storage until late August.

I was originally quoted early in May for around $750.00 for the move + first month of storage. I had a 1BD apartment, so not a ton of items, but a lot of larger items, including an upright piano. The move was originally scheduled for Friday 5/31 from 3-6:30PM.

I received a phone call from the woman I coordinated this with, that an error was made in calculating the quote, due to the piano. There was a $195 piano charge and they needed to bring an additional mover. I was told that with the original movers, the time it took would be less so the $ would more of less cancel out. Even though this item was included in my inventory with the original quote - this was missed by them...

In addition, I was told (again, less than 24 hours in advance) that my originally scheduled move from 3-6:30 needed to be moved to the morning due to updated number of movers required. We agreed 11AM would work. I was then sent a quote for $1,015.00 for the updates. Again, kind of upsetting but not that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things.

Friday morning rolls around and the mover calls me at 9:50 that they are pulling up. We were in the middle of packing some additional boxes. We thought we would have more time. Nonetheless, the move went pretty smooth. They were there about 2 hours, and I was quoted 3 hours of labor, so I thought, great, sort of right on budget assuming the time it took to get to me and to the storage unit to unload things.

Saturday morning I was sent the bill of lading and final invoice and I was charged $1,350.00. Now I’m ticked off. The movers were professional, but everything else about the ordeal has rubbed me the wrong way.

Am I right to be upset about the miscommunication, additional charges, etc? What sort of recourse do I have?

On top of this I’m paying this same company for 3 months of storage and have another move (from storage to a new apartment) in late August. Looking for some advice.

UPDATE: I just received a call from the moving company customer service representative and the call actually went way better than I imagined. I was expecting a “sorry but your SOL here,” but the lady took the time to listen to the full story. She apologized for the run around, said she would look into everything and get a better understanding of what happened and would likely be offering a refund of some sort. She said she would be back in touch with me tomorrow and gave me her direct contact info. I will be sure to update this post once I hear from them tomorrow.

UPDATE 2: They refunded me $300 and got back down to the 2nd estimate. The customer service representative was nice and professional.

Edit: spelling mistakes
