What do you think of the current "game journalism" state?
So, I have recently been taking a closer look to the work of some game "reviewers" and the so called "game journalists", and I must say that I find their work to be... troublesome and incoherent, to say the least.
Why you might ask?
Well, a few years ago, I think there was a lot of transparency when it came to actually reviewing a game and giving your opinion about it. But right now, it feels just like a complete shit biased show.
We are in a period of time in which people who complains and wants to boycott the same companies over and over again are the same ones who also go to buy the new FIFA or the new COD as soon as they can without even hesitating.
The same people who claims that Fortnite is the shit because it reinvented the wheel by adding overpriced cosmetics which makes the game more fun.
The same guys who say that RDR2 is the best game in the industry even though its multiplayer is way beyond shit.
The same guys who think Fallout 76 is a great game because it has improved a lot, even though it didn't bring anything new to the table in terms of gameplay, although to be fair, their micro-transactions system is working wonders so more companies might add a similar MC system in the near future... And I have only talked about the last 2 years or so...
Now, Anthem is not perfect by any means, but are you seriously telling me that it deserves the same score that some shitty games just because it didn't meet your expectations? Questionable!
Sure, all the trailers that we got were far, far away from the retail version, but then again, hasn't this same scenario been happening for well over a decade (if not more) now? If you don't believe me, please take a look at Playstation's Killzone's trailer (just to name one example) and then we talk again.
My point is, maybe our expectations are the ones playing tricks on us and not so much the game itself? Although, misguided marketing only exacerbates this situation.
End point is, we are living in a seriously toxic period of time in which developers suffer from permanent stress due to dealing with multiple "crunches"; in an era where the games can launch with more micro-transaction methods than actual content. And yet, we say nothing.
I am not sure If I am alone here, but I do hope (and want) Anthem to succeed so BW can shut up all the trolls once and for all. So people know that the few studios that have the balls to launch something completely new/unique in terms of gameplay, narrative (like Cyberpunk 2077), etc., can still thrive in an era where the annual sagas and games with overpriced cosmetics have taken the lead.
Strong alone ,stronger together.
