[Question] How to think less visually when improvising ?
I noticed that the biggest problem with my improvisation is how I think about it. I tend to think more like : "I'm gonna place my fingers here, play those frets" , "now I'll do a bend, slide or legato" , rather than how it's gonna sound and fit with the background , and since I already spent some time improvising I know what notes to avoid and which sound good together, so this approach sounded decent enough to not try to change it for a while, but I realised how repetitive and weak in terms of melody it is. I'm pretty good at transcribing, and I train it regularly but It still doesn't do much help with composing and improvising my own stuff. Do you got any tips for me ?
Edit : So, best tips I got from you summed up, for all the folks struggling like me :
- play without looking at the fretboard, let your instincts guide you towards the melody
- play the melody on one string, it forces you to use smaller intervals, so it resembles a human voice much more
- try to hum the melody before playing it, it will make limitations of your eyes and fingers detached from the musicmaking process
- sing the melody as you play it, reminds me of David Gilmour when he plays Wish You Were Here :)
- put your guitar in an non-standard tuning and then try to play stuff you know, it's good because you can't rely on known shapes
- try to sync your phrases with breathing, like as if you played a saxophone of a flute
So basically, sometimes forget about your 6 strings, you have only one, and try to sing along as you play while not looking at the fretboard at all.
Thanks for the help guys !
