Replacing strings on bass

Hey, so I’ve recently got my first bass and I have a feeling I should probably change the strings as I got my bass about 2 months ago... the thing is I’ve never done it before, I’ve watched a couple of videos so should be okay, but I have a question. It’s kinda stupid I think but I genuinely have no clue, does one have to break the strings? I mean I get it if they are worn down or whatever but if they are still okay and you just want to change them is there actually a way to take them off without breaking them? Couldn’t one just unwind them at the head? I feel like this a stupid question 😅
