Am I asking for too much for wanting to have an interesting career?

Hey everyone,

So here's the deal. I work in a position I'm not really excited with. Long story short, my title is QA Inspector but I'm sorta doing Lab Tech work. The work is unfulfilling, messy (I test/work with grease), I feel that I'm not really getting any real experience and I just find the whole business/industry uninteresting. Now, my co-worker and friend who've I known for years (beginning of college) thinks I'm complaining too much based on I'm wanting to do something different based on the fact I keep stressing that I have my MBA and I have been interviewing internally for a few analyst positions. He claims that it's just a piece of paper (which I agree with but he has one too) and that he's happy with is position (he's a supervisor and I was too but I was moved to my current role due to people leaving and I didn't have a choice) not to mention that he's getting a promotion to manager soon. He thinks that if he could get to where he is now, I can do the same. The thing is, his department was run by a very good manager/mentor who I feel gave him a lot of leeway to run things his way, has a great support staff/employees and such. I, on the other hand was put into a department that is very mismanaged, lack of communication and was not really allowed to use my leadership/analytical skills (plus I have come to realize that management wasn't my strongest suit). Also, even though we work in the same warehouse, my department and his are totally different in what they do.

I'm now in a different department (with a different manager now) but I still have to work a lot with my old department and I still feel like it's the same stuff. I'm bored most of the time and then when I do have work, it's just super strenuous and uninteresting busy work. I really feel that my career path was stunted compared to his.

What I want to know is, I am wrong for wanting to do something different based on that I have an MBA (and an undergrad in engineering) and to do something that I find interesting? Sure, I get paid decently and I could work even harder (which I wouldn't know what else to do at this point to make me stand out more) and get to the same level/promotion as my friend/co-worker but if I'm not happy/interested with what I do, is there even a point?

TL;DR: I'm uninterested with my work and I want to use my MBA/Engineering combo to get something better/more fulfilling but co-worker who is getting a promotion thinks I'm complaining/not trying hard enough. Am I asking for too much?
