I'm Having my own Sessions with Dr. Akopian
So it's been a pretty stressful time in my life recently. I'm 25 and have a good job and a boyfriend I love, friends and hobbies. But I recently decided to live by myself for the first time. My roommate (and friend!) wanted to live IN Washington, DC and I wanted to stay on the outskirts in Arlington, so we separated and my boyfriend and I aren't at the point yet where we are ready to live together (a mutual decision!). And as most of my other friends are married or live out of state...living alone was an exciting, albeit nerve-wracking option that seemed inevitable, as I didn't really want to live with anyone random.
Cut to today, I officially moved into my apartment and I've decorated and it looks fantastic. But it's a very, very strange feeling living alone. It's only my 3rd night, but I've been feeling lonely and regretful and I've just had a LOT of negative thoughts rolling around in my head. Is being alone and feeling alone different? How do you discern? Does this feeling go away? I've always enjoyed writing, and so I decided to write a scene where I was in a therapy session with Dr. Akopian. It's been really helpful and fun! I'm trying to write her like she was originally written on the show, with her funny quips and what not. But mostly I'm trying to capture her sage wisdom.
(Also, I'm aware that even though I'm feeling these things, they are normal and will probably, hopefully, pass. While I have nothing against actual therapy and have been before, I'm not actively going right now and don't feel I need to - writing these scenes is just sort of an outlet for excess anxiety. I'm well aware that writing imaginary therapy sessions with a fictional therapist is not a substitute for therapy).
