TIFU by single-handedly getting my team disqualified for a race

Didn't happen exactly today but it did happen on this day a few years back. I was part of the school's track team and I was the third runner for the 4×100metre relay race. All I had to do was grab the baton from the second guy and pass it to our last runner.

I think it's important for me to kinda give some rules for a relay race. Firstly, its important to NEVER drop the baton or you're disqualified. Secondly, don't run before the umpire shoots his blank. And another thing that's important is that when we pass the baton, we have to pass it within a 20metre exchange zone or it's a disqualification.

In order for us to make sure we pass the baton within this zone, our coach told us to bring some brown tape and position them at certain spots. His reasoning behind this was that when we see the runner before us pass this tape, we have to start running towards the exchange zone. (This is important)

Now that I've explained all this, here's my FU. It was a pretty windy day and dead leaves were flying all over the place. The umpire had shot his blanks. The leadoff runners took off and they've passed the baton to the 2nd runners. We're in the lead and I'm nervous as heck.

And then, there are literal winds of change. All the dead leaves blow onto the track and the adrenaline in my brain causes me to believe that there are at least five brown tapes on the ground and I don't know when to start running. So, I did the most logical thing I could think of; I fucking sprinted when the second runner was 30metres away from me.

The only thing I could hear from behind me was "YOU'RE TOO FUCKING FAST." I grabbed the baton outside of the exchange zone and this cost us our lead. But our last runner, manage to pull off some miracle and clutch a first place.

But we didn't win. We got disqualified because of a foul commited by the third runner. (Me COUGH) Since then, my coach never considered to put me on the team and I managed to secure my position as a dedicated benchwarmer. My teammates stopped looking at me in the eye cause of the gold I lost us and eventually I wasn't really recognized as a track member.

TLDR; I got my track team disqualified because I ran when I saw a leaf on the ground.
