Changing filaments caused error. Help

I had a 12 hour print and 20 min were left and my filament roll was empty and the sensor picked it up and after I changed the filament, it wanted to do the calibration and it kept crashing into the print. Why would it try to do the calibration? I was able to save the print tho as it was a minor part that was not finished
