June 4 1969: McDowell Dominates Pilots, Team To Hold Tryouts In Iowa

The last time the Pilots saw “Sudden” Sam McDowell, they chased him from the game in short order. They would not be so fortunate this time, as McDowell was in better form during the game, only surrendering the Pilots’ first hit after 4 2/3 innings, and getting three hits himself, one of which sparked a five-run rally in the third inning. He began to get wild in the seventh inning and was lifted for Stan Williams, and the Indians cruised to a 10-4 victory.

In minor league news, Pilot scouts are now traveling across the country looking for new talent — the Hamburg, Iowa Reporter informs local citizens that the Pilots will be holding a “tryout camp” at Hamburg’s Clayton Field, June 11-12. Scouting Supervisor Bill Clark will be present, assisted by Stub Roberts and Don Clayton. Players trying out must bring their own equipment and be prepared to work from 9 AM to 3 PM. No lunch break will be provided. Qualifications are as follows:

Players must be 16 years of age. High school and college players who are on summer vacation may compete without endangering their amateur status. High school players whose classes have not been dismissed for the summer must have written permission from the principal of the school they attend.

No American Legion player will be allowed to participate if such participation interferes with any Legion activity. Such participation will be permitted only with a letter of approval from either the coach or the commander of the Legion post the player represents.

Players are expected to furnish their own shoes, uniforms, gloves, etc., with the Pilots furnishing all other equipment. Players are also responsible for their own travel and living expenses, if any, with the understanding that expenses will be reimbursed to those players signed to a contract with a Seattle organization club.
