How common is it to have publications as an undergrad?

Hello r/askphysics!

I’m an undergraduate physics student, and just got my first research position this summer. As the title states, I’m wondering how common it is for physics undergrads to have publications under their belts when applying for grad school.

I ask because I’m slowly understanding how much work goes into getting publishable results. We don’t even know if the results will be publishable yet, and in the best case scenario where they are, writing a paper will take a long time. Especially since I would be writing it during the semester while taking classes, and it’s only me and my PI working on this project.

I’m freaking out a little because when browsing subreddits about grad admissions, some people are like “oh yeah, I have three publications, one first author” and etc. If one project takes like two years, that just doesn’t seem feasible to me??

Any graduate students or professors here that can shed some insight? Thanks in advance!!
