Tips for painting on a drum?

A few weeks ago a friend of mine asked me to create a design for her deerskin drum. I've done some research into what mediums work best on this type of surface. Some people say acrylic paints or paint markers work well. I'm just concerned that it will flake off when she plays on her drum. I know I could just use permanent markers but I want to be able to use something that would colour in well. Does anyone here have any experience painting on drums like this? I'd love some tips!
