Field Prep- Best, Least Disruptive Ways to Clear

We have a 3 acre portion that used to be mowed grass that has been overtaken by junk brush, weeds, saplings, and other invasive plants.

Our original plan was to till it all and plant, but we've discovered what a rich and diverse ecosystem we have here so the next best option is to plant prairie grass and flowers to kind of restore what could have been there.

Some friends of ours who have done extensive prairie restoration gave us some Garlon 4 to mix with diesel to kill the saplings and large weeds. Not keen on using much chemicals but its likely necessary for a bit.

We're still scoping out methods to prep the site beyond this.

Anyone have pointers for clearing and dealing with dormant seeds?

Has anyone had luck with smothering?
