Please type me! Curious as to what people think
- How old are you? What's your gender? Give us a general description of yourself.
I am a 19 year old male college student studying Political Science and Economics at a small liberal arts college in the U.S., with plans to go to law school after doing Peace Corps or AmeriCorps.
- Is there a medical diagnosis that impact your mental/comportamental stability somehow?
I have not been diagnosed with anything before, but I likely have social anxiety (though it is better than it used to be).
- Describe your upbringing. Did it have any kind of religious or structured influence? How did you respond to it?
I was raised as a reform Jew and I didn't take to it at all. I had to be dragged to religious school and didn't like the singing or community aspect of it, and I never believed in God. I completely stopped having anything to do with it after my Bar Mitzvah. Now that I am a bit older, I see the positive influence that religion plays in peoples' lives and think it can be a great thing, but I personally can not wrap my head around any belief system, despite admiring the good it does for people.
- What do you do as a job or as a career (if you have one)? Do you like it? Why or why not?
No job/career other than just a part-time job; I'm a college student. I love school and learning about subjects I'm interested in. I tend to be less interested in political and economic theory and more about application of public policy, what makes a good leader, strategy (with campaigns and such), and want to understand the political/economic/judicial systems driving our society. I tend not to like my classes that deal with pure theory, although I do generally love philosophy, especially ethics, as I find if often provides valuable frameworks to live life that I do not find as much in religion. If I am interested in a topic, I love discussing it in class and providing my opinion, and enjoy writing papers about interesting topics.
- If you had to spend an entire weekend by yourself, how would you feel? Would you feel lonely or refreshed?
Awful, but less awful if I were to find places to go by myself. I tend to get lonely pretty easily, especially when I am at school. There was a holiday weekend last year when I was the only one of my friends at college and it was pretty shitty, to be honest. Generally, if I have a lot of alone time, I use it to watch TV, movies, read, basically try to waste time as easily as possible.
- What is your relation with movement and your surroundings? For instance do you prefer a sport or outdoors event? If an outdoors event what is it? And why? If not what type of activities do you tend to engage in?
Not sure exactly what this question means. I tend to prefer outdoor activities like hiking, walking, or bicycling over going to the gym - I think this is partly because of some weird gym anxiety, but I prefer being outside and looking at nature. I just find these activities much more relaxing and that they help me mentally as well.
- How curious are you? Do you have more ideas then you can execute? What are your curiosities about? What are your ideas about - is it environmental or conceptual, and can you please elaborate?
I am pretty curious and tend to do a ton of independent (but sometimes somewhat shallow) research. I am curious about my academic interests (politics, economics, law, philosophy) and also about different cultures (especially food). I'm curious about what other people are like and tend to ask people, like my family, a lot of seemingly random questions about their past, partly to learn from them. In other words, I'm curious about what has lead a person down a certain path.
- Would you enjoy taking on a leadership position? Do you think you would be good at it? What would your leadership style be?
Yes, and I think I would be good at certain aspects of it. I think I am (or would be) generally good at management and ensuring that things are running smoothly and on-schedule. It depends on the project/job, but I think I would prefer to delegate tasks and make sure that things are working out logistically, that I'm fitting everyone in where they fit best, and make sure that everybody's input is heard to help me make decisions. I would be good at giving praise, but I do think I would struggle if I had to confront someone if they were not doing well for whatever reason.
- Are you coordinated? Why do you feel as if you are or are not? Do you enjoy working with your hands in some form? Describe your activity?
Not at all, I can barely write a legible sentence on paper. I hate working with my hands.
- Are you artistic? If yes, describe your art? If you are not particular artistic but can appreciate art please likewise describe what forums of art you enjoy. Please explain your answer.
No, I'm not artistic, but I appreciate movies, books, and TV shows that challenge me. I tend to seek out art that allows me to reflect on myself, really just about things like love, death, family..it is hard for me to watch something if I do not have an emotional connection to it.
- What's your opinion about the past, present, and future? How do you deal with them?
I tend to focus on the future a lot and I always have. I am always looking towards the next step and rarely look back, and I have trouble staying in the present. I often think about what I am doing now in terms of what I want to do in the future...basically, I have an idea of what I want my life to eventually look like, and I struggle with making decisions about the present because of this.
- How do you act when others request your help to do something (anything)? If you would decide to help them, why would you do so?
It depends on the person and the action. Frankly, I don't enjoy helping with physical work but I will do it. I am more willing and happy to help someone that is working on something academic or who needs advice/personal guidance, or just wants to talk. I think, in general, I enjoy helping others help themselves more than actually helping them, if that makes sense? But I still am willing to help people do things, especially if it will make them happy (and especially in a relationship).
- How important is efficiency and productivity to you?
Important in theory but I often have trouble with procrastination. I tend to plan out my weeks when in college, but not exactly follow my plan. In general, though, efficiency is important to me, and I tend to weigh the costs of doing something with the benefit I get out of it (do I really need to do a 40 page reading or can I just skim it?).
- Do you control others, even if indirectly? How and why do you do that?
I don't know, I try not to, but I probably do pressure people a bit.
- What are your hobbies? Why do you like them?
I don't have any real hobbies. I pretty much went over everything I like doing in previous questions (reading, walking, researching stuff, etc.)
- What is your learning style? What kind of learning environments do you struggle with most? Why do you like/struggle with these learning styles? Do you prefer classes involving memorization, logic, creativity, or your physical senses?
I need to talk through things to learn and I enjoy discussion classes. I am not engaged in lecture classes and it's hard for me to listen to one person talking for too long without getting bored. I like classes involving logic, which probably explains my interests in economics and philosophy. I am also interested in systems and rules.
- How good are you at strategizing? Do you easily break up projects into manageable tasks? Or do you have a tendency to wing projects and improvise as you go?
I tend to plan out every phase of a project, but generally don't stick to them unless I'm smart about doing it.
- What are your aspirations?
Having a family and several children in the future is the most important thing to me, along with having a fulfilling career. There is nothing more that I want than to be have the chance to love my wife and children with everything I have, and to be able to guide my children and ensure that they become truly good people. As far as career goes, I want to be an attorney, but I'm not sure what type. I'm also interested in politics, public policy, and education.
- What are your fears? What makes you uncomfortable? What do you hate? Why?
I'm scared that I won't find somebody to have a life with, and that I will prioritize my career too much, to the point where I run out of time to have a family. Basically, I'm scared of being lonely. On the other hand, I'm fearful that I'm going to "settle" and be unfulfilled in my work. I'm also scared that I'm going to let life pass me by and not capitalize on every opportunity I have - not allow myself to hit the highs and lows of life, instead staying somewhere in the middle.
It makes me uncomfortable to be around large groups of people that I don't know if people in the group already know each other. I just feel out of place in these cases and find it hard to break into groups (though this likely has to do with social anxiety).
- What do the "highs" in your life look like?
When I am with people that I love often (family, friends, girlfriend) and always have something to do. When I feel that I can fulfill my career aspirations, for whatever reason. When I've come to a realization, when I read a book that changes my outlook on things.
- What do the "lows" in your life look like?
Being alone with nothing to do and no one to see. Being confronted or having someone mad at me, feeling like I've done something wrong.
- How attached are you to reality? Do you daydream often, or do you pay attention to what's around you? If you do daydream, are you aware of your surroundings while you do so?
I do tend to daydream about the future and get distracted very easily, but I am always aware of my physical surroundings,
- Imagine you are alone in a blank, empty room. There is nothing for you to do and no one to talk to. What do you think about?
I would think about who I am as a person and try to process the situation. I'd think about people who matter to me and the path that I want to take in the future.
- How long do you take to make an important decision? And do you change your mind once you've made it?
A long, long time. I think through every single factor when making a decision. I am extremely deliberate about decisions I make and will never make a large spur-of-the-moment decision. I rarely change my mind once I've made it but I do worry that I made the wrong decision.
- How long do you take to process your emotions? How important are emotions in your life?
I take a long time to process my emotions and they are incredibly important in my life. I am extremely introspective and spend a lot of my free time thinking about my purpose and trying to understand who I am as a person. I can avoid being too emotional in public or around people pretty easily, but in private or around people I trust, I'm pretty open about my emotions. Emotions tend to drive my big-picture decisions as well. One thing to mention here is that I very, very rarely get angry at people. I can't remember the last time I've yelled at somebody and never have an urge to be physically aggressive towards anybody. I can get annoyed, though, and I think it sometimes can be hard for me to hide that.
- Do you ever catch yourself agreeing with others just to appease them and keep the conversation going? How often? Why?
I try to avoid conflict whenever possible, so in general I don't always tell people when I disagree with them if I don't view the topic as important. But I'm not afraid to let people know that I disagree with their perspective or if they say something that I disagree with strongly or if they state something that is factually incorrect. If it is a matter of opinion or something like a political conversation, I sometimes don't say something and try to understand where someone is coming from before offering my own opinion.
- Do you break rules often? Do you think authority should be challenged, or that they know better? If you do break rules, why would you?
I rarely break rules. I think authority should be challenged, but I view too much challenging of authority to be, in some cases, childish. Authority is not always bad and I don't view hierarchies as a bad thing in principle. Sometimes I think that people do not take the time to understand the perspective of authority figures and view the power structure as "us v. them" which I strongly disagree with. I would break rules if it were for a greater purpose (helping a friend or family member, for instance).
- What is the ideal life, in your opinion?
A few kids, wife, and animals, living in a city where I can easily go to a variety of restaurants, tons of entertainment options, and eat fresh food. Being fulfilled in my work and being able to spend a lot of time with my family. Having money and time to travel frequently. Doing some sort of good, whether through my work or volunteering.
Some additional things I think may provide insight to my personality:
- When watching a movie, book, or TV show, I am terrible at remembering plot points or specific scenes unless I have watched it multiple times. I am better at remembering how they made me feel and the meaning/lesson behind it.
- In romantic relationships (the one I've had lol), I tend to be very verbally affectionate and considerate, possibly to a fault. When I really care about someone, I can ignore my own needs and revolve my life around that one person. I love doing cheesy romantic shit too, as long as I don't feel pressured to do it.
- I am pretty competitive and ruthless when playing games. I care about winning.
My cognitive function test results are below. I feel like I'm half ENFJ and half INFJ, but it may be that I am an ENFJ with social anxiety. Thank you to anyone who read all of this - I'm curious as to what people think my type is. I can answer any more questions if it is unclear what type I am.
