Need to exit China in late June. What are some good recommendations for turning a visa run into a mini-holiday?

Living in China with my family (wife and two young children). I’m here on a spousal visa and need to exit the country every 180 days. Was planning on just heading down to Hong Kong for a day or two, but my wife wants to make a summer holiday out of it. She spoke to a travel agency and 7 days in Phuket stood out. I’ve been to Thailand before and would love to go back with the family, but I’m concerned with it being during the rainy season. Any suggestions? Is Phuket worth the trip in late June? Should we all just head down to Hong Kong? Is there somewhere else in our proximity that you may suggest for a week long holiday that doesn’t break the bank?
