Can you launch pirated steam games from the Steam Library?

I am able to launch them from their folders but not from the play button in the steam library. It just brings up a window saying that it's gonna launch it and then it doesn't. Is there a fix to this or would launching it from steam library not be a good idea and cause a ban?
