Underrated player from Sunday night
Everyone is talking about Carles Gil, who was the MotM and made MLS team of the week (both well deserved). I'm not seeing a lot of talk about Juan Agudelo's performance on Sunday, which for me was absolutely brilliant and second best on the team.
Playing in a number 8 role (which I don't think we've ever seen him in?), Juan was the glue in the middle of the field that allowed everything to happen. Defensively, he had the most interceptions on the team, blocked a shot, had a clearance, and had 1 or 2 timely tackles. I had NEVER seen him track back and defend before, and he was great at it.
On the other side of the ball, Juan was at the start of the majority of the Revs counters with his terrific ball control and Tom Brady esque surgicial precision on his passes. Often receiving / winning the ball under pressure in the Revs half, Juan had the 2nd most touches on the team, the most successful dribbles on the team, and lead the team with 93.9% (!) passing accuracy (again, often advancing the ball forward, not just sideways and backwards, and starting the counterattacks).
Everone has recognized Agudelo's talent and potential since he turned pro with the Red Bulls, but he hasn't lived up to it. Maybe he was being played in the wrong positions all along. Gotta give a lot of credit to Bruce here for trying something new with this enigma of a player and getting outstanding results.
I'm really excited to see him play the rest of the year and if this performance was an anomaly or if he's for real.
