Master Of Orion did many things right, freighters are one of them!

Suggestion

Hey everyone, I thought of another example how stellaris could learn from the grandmaster of the genre.

In Master Of Orion, you had a freighter pool that was used to distribute food as well as to resettle pops. Distributing food happened instantly, because it would have been too complicated otherwise. It was just a pool for imported food that added up, using the appropriate amount of freighters from the freighter pool.

However, resettling pops took as long as a ship would take to get from A to B with the current propulsion tech, and to move one pop you needed one freighter. Both pop and freighter were unavailable for as long as they were under way.

This had the advantage that you couldnt just prop up new colonies at literally light speed. You rather had to pace you expansion and consider the amount of time and freighters it would take to resettle those pops.

In Stellaris, there are transport ships for troops.

How awesome would it be, if there were transportships flying between planets when you resettle pops.

This would help with the resettlement abuse (both for colonization and for purge stacking) and give new tactical opportunities when at war. It would also help with the multiplayer abuse to resettle all pops before a planet is under siege, as you only have so many freighters in the pool, you probably cannot do this in short succession. Another pro is that it would increase immersion. No more resettling pops from cut off planets without an escort fleet following the ships.

It would even be relativly easy to implement, because all the mechanics are there already. The transport ships, the pathfinding estimating the time of arrival.

Now, its all open for debate - for example if there should be a freighter pool as well, or just the transports physically flying between planets without a pool. Also there are several features that could be connected to this that come to mind.

What do you guys think?
