Any advice on creating patterns?

I like to create my own patterns by hand, but recently I've been wanting to learn how to do it on my computer. I figured this kinda gets into the realm of graphic design, so if you guys have any tips or suggestions (such as what program I should download), I would greatly appreciate it.
