You should wait anyways and let the car idle for a bit before turning it off and before starting to drive...

afaik that only matters if you have a turbo. the reason you let it run is to allow the oil to flow, cooling the turbo and engine to idle temp before switching off. this limited the degradation of the turbo and oil.
letting it idle before stating your journey is good in any car, but 5-10 seconds is usually enough.
