FAQ - Read Before Asking Questions!
Just wanted to address some of the most frequently asked questions about The Backrooms Game!
How much will it cost?
Free for this version!
Where can I download it?
Do you have a Discord?
Is there a Steam version?
If this free version gains enough popularity, Pie On A Plate Productions will expand the game into a full project that we will release on Steam for around $10-$15 (price subject to change). This version would contain more levels, content, and even VR!
However, the free version might be moving to Steam for download soon!
What is the objective of the game?
Venture as deep into the Backrooms as you can without dying. Every 30 seconds, you must check your watch to stay sane. The goal of the game is to travel as far as possible and explore as much as you can, find an exit (which is somewhat rare), and exit alive to save your score. Avoid going completely mad, but also don't chicken out too early and exit as soon as you find an exit, as you potentially could go much further while still retaining your sanity.
How are the levels generated?
Each level is 100% random, with no run being the same as the last. The generation is tile based, meaning that there are no premade rooms being used, allowing for greater replayability, and more variety each time. This system will be expanded upon in the potential Steam release.
How many levels are there?
Only Level 0 for this free version. However, the potential expanded version will have Levels 0-2 at minimum, maybe more.
Are there monsters in the game?
Yes. There is a single Being that roams the Backrooms, though it is quite rare to encounter. God help you if you do.
Are there jumpscares?
Not conventional ones, no! No out of the blue, in your face, cheap jumpscares like some other horror games do. I wanted to capture the true essence of The Backrooms, and so I focused the most on the ambience of the setting and how it changes around you. That being said, there is still a monster as mentioned above, however, the jumpscares are extremely minimal, out of the ordinary, and attempting to be anything but cheap.
Is there an Explore-Only mode for people that don't want the horror part of the game?
Yes!
Easter eggs?
Yes, but you have to find it yourself! Even more rare than the monster.
VR?
Not in the free version. Planned for the Steam release, should we develop it.
How long does each game last?
10-20 minutes, depending on the skill of the player. Though each game varies.
Console? Mobile? Other devices?
Due to the intensive level generation and graphical nature of this game, mobile devices are likely to never be supported. Sorry 😢. We are aiming to port the full Steam version (should it be created) to consoles!
Windows and Linux are confirmed to be supported currently. Mac unfortunately is not supported, due to the fact that they do not support DX11, which is required for this game. Thanks a lot, Apple.
Thankfully, an awesome user has written a guide on how to setup a virtual machine to play the game on Mac anyways!
Hardware needed to run this game?
So far, a minimum of 1GB of VRAM (though 1.5 is recommended), 3.0ghz CPU, 4GB RAM, and about 1GB of hard drive space!
Is multiplayer planned for the future?
Nope! For a lot of reasons. Mainly the technical issues that would arise, but also the true lore of the Backrooms would be compromised.
What engine was used?
Unity3D 2019.1, with the SEGI plugin for realtime cone-tracing global illumination for levels that lack the ability to statically bake beforehand.
Who developed this, and how did they do it so quickly??
This game is a solo project made by David Campbell III, Founder/CEO/Lead Developer of Pie On A Plate Productions LLC. I knew that the lifecycle of a meme/creepypasta like this would be short, so there have been about 3 weeks of 12+ hour days of endless designing and developing to get this game out there as soon as possible! This is another reason that a free version is being released straight away as opposed to spending a great deal more time on a paid version with more content right away. Should the full Steam release be made, the entire PPP team will contribute!
I hope this clears up any questions that anyone has! Let me know if I've forgotten anything! 😊
