Day drinking

I travel to Tokyo often for work. I have plenty off downtime while visiting. Where can I drink all day? Most places open at 5pm. Sometimes I just sit in the park. Where do the boozebags go? I found a list online that was more microbrew places. I am looking for dumps

Are you ok, OP?

Plenty happy. I just like going out all day and sleeping early.

Just buy some Strong Zeros and hang out in front of a 7/11. Seriously though, I've never had a problem finding a spot to drink during the day. Any small street in Shinjuku will have a bar that's open.

Came here to say this. Saw this. So: this. 7-11 curb is the best.

uselessadminOP•

I must be going to areas that are too quiet.

3

How "dumpy" are those places? Can you get a cheap beer there? I see a lot of bars open around Shinjuku as well, but they're all pretty smokey and "入り難い" kinda whiskey and jazz bars. As OP mentioned, there are plenty of craft beer places around that open early, but you're paying through the nose for a beer there (e.g. Coaster in Shimokita, opens at noon, but its ¥1400~2000 for a pint).

I know a shithole yakitori joint with like 3-400 yen beers out the Kabukicho exit at Shinjuku. It opens at 11 or 12. Seems to fit the bill.

4
uselessadminOP•

This was my trouble - lots of early places are nice and offer high end beer. not quite what I need in the day

2
ZRaddue•

Just do what the rest of us do and bring a bunch of tallboy Strong Zeros or bottles of whiskey to the park and drink until you pass out.

13
uselessadminOP•

I enjoy that too. I try not to pass out so I don't ruin the park for everyone

3
ZRaddue•

That's just part of the beauty of Japanese parks.

9
Disco_baboon•

In fact, some say it makes the parks even more beautiful.

7

i can confirm it does.

The police told me off for kicking a football in Yoyogi park last weekend.

The pile of 6 empty strong cans next to me and my clear intoxication were agreeable however.

Dude, obviously not looking hard enough. If you are in Shinjuku there is a place called Yamato that is open 24 hours and has 180 yen beers. Paradise.

I am also in less busy places with few tourists. This place looks good to me.

1
ZRaddue•

I'm definitely pinning this on my Google Maps.

1

Good question. I know you're talking about day drinking, not working, but I really miss working from the pub during the day which I used to do often back home. Bars where I'm from even used to do themed "work from the pub" events during the day.

I'm sure there are places to go, I'm just not aware of them. You can't really beat the value of some cheap tinnies in the park though. I presume you're looking for something a bit more social?

6
uselessadminOP•

I love the park too but these days it's really humid. I was thinking a daytime bar to get out the heat. I probably need to be in busier areas. I won't be working from the bar since I am more of a consultant

2

I am a consultant and do most I my work (statistical analysis in R) from the pub.

3
uselessadminOP•

I consult for studios so I am usually on site and nice when many days I am not required at all.

odd_combo•

I hope you're doing alright. If you're looking for more for the small-dish-and-booze vibe there are some places near Okachimachi and Ueno that start serving fairly early. Most of the places are not on Google Maps---just wander around that area and you'll find small bars with people drinking.

3
uselessadminOP•

I am doing it all wrong and using Google maps mostly

around Ueno(上野) or Akabane(赤羽) is Mecca of Day drinking.

seafood chain restaurant 磯丸水産(isomaru suisan) is opening 24hours.

Try google "昼飲み"(= Day Drinking)and your Area.

[deleted]•

This. Those are the two heavy hitters of the day drinking scene.

1
uselessadminOP•

I just learned what nomihodai is

1
teve4085•

Go old school. Lots of standing bars in Ueno are open during the day. Cheap beers and decent food.

3
RejoicefulChicken•

Most pubs near working centers are open for lunch and happy to serve alcohol. Many Dubliner's for example.

2

From your link, only the Shinagawa branch is open continuously from 11:30am till late. The Akasaka branch closes between 2pm and 5pm. All the others do not open until either 3pm or 5pm.

3
japan_lifer•

that's not true. Read harder. Shibuya open from 12.

that would be my recommendation actually.

1

You're right, Shibuya is open from 12. Not a bad choice at all if the drinks are cheap as well?

1
Disco_baboon•

Which area though? Also, Google maps helps you with that. Whatever area you are in, type "bar" into the search and you can choose "open now". Tabelog etc can do the same.

Apparently Bar Coo in Shinjuku is open from 7am-2am for example. Haven't been there though so can't confirm. I'm sure there are others but most will be focused on food during day time. The dumps aren't usually open during day time as they would be empty... and the bartenders often drink with the customers so they may need some time to sleep lol.

You may have more luck in somewhat busy residential areas like Shimokita or Takadanobaba.

2
uselessadminOP•

I am also west of central Tokyo which may not have helped. All these suggestions are great

2
Disco_baboon•

Yea, you'd be looking at areas like Nakano, Kichijoji or Koenji. Kichijoji isn't the likely place for day time drinking but Koenji should have at least something, and Nakano as well. You may have to walk around a bit to find the smaller places not on Google Maps/tabelog. Let us know if you do find something!

1
[deleted]•

You'd think it would be, but Koenji isn't that good for daytime drinking. Kichijoji at least has Iseya---shit food, but the atmosphere is OK depending on the location, and the south side branches are open from 12.

2
uselessadminOP•

I love Koenji for nights - I should visit in the day

Get a private room at Uotami (魚民)

1
Crunkyblamf•

Dubliner’s.

1
uselessadminOP•

I should do it. Couldn't tell if this chain was any good

2
ApertureLabia•

It's OK, but I remember the drinks being 1000 yen or more. Not really a dive.

1
Crunkyblamf•

The food isn’t great, but good locations and daytime hours. Another option is Excelsior coffee shops.

1
KuriTokyo•

How about standing Yakitori places? They can be a bit sociable.

You mentioned you don't like the summer heat so maybe not for you?

1
uselessadminOP•

That could be good times - out of the sun and I am good. I am here about 5 times a year so I am a novice

2
kaderick•

Just stop by any random izakaya

0†

Very few izakaya open before 5pm.

3
uselessadminOP•

this was my first discovery

2
kaderick•

Local ones, sure. Are there not any 24-hr chains?

1

True, there are a few places like Isomaru Suisan.
