How good is Suunto's sleep tracking nowdays

I'm considering and upgrade from my Fitbit Charge 2 and currently looking through my options (Garmin, Polar, Suunto). While generally I'm interesting in more data from my workouts (fitbit has no love for chest straps), I love the day-to-day stuff that fitbit provides, like heart rate and sleep tracking. I'm seeing mixed feedback for Suunto, looks like the technology is still fairly primitive, only using accelerometer, even in high end models. Sleep stages are nitpicking, but I expect it to at least correctly observe when I sleep and how much time I was out, which fitbit does exceptionally accurately.

Edit: Thanks for all the feedback. I decided to go with a Garmin Forerunner 245, the software looks more mature than on Suunto, but it was a tough choice.

I have a suunto spartan trainer and I think its ok to good. The watch is often very accurate when it comes to time I fall asleep up to when you wake up. Sometimes I will say I was awake during the night although I have no memory of that, so i take that with a grain of salt. Furthermore I wont provide anymore stats than avg heartrate, sleeptime, and deepsleep which is also useless or I never am in deep sleep, haha. But if you want to know heartrate and avarage sleeptimes during the week its good. For further info its not so good. Hope this helps.

Looks like you need to tell it beforehand when your usual sleep time is. Was that inconvenient in any way?

Not really, it will still register if you go to sleep later, I never sleep earlier than 2300 so that's what I've set it on, have not yet encountered any problems in that regard. Maybe the Suunto 5 Will be even better, don't know what watch you are looking for?

I'm looking at the Suunto 5 or Spartan Sport, should be a bit cheaper, since it's an older model. I don't really see a reason to go higher, since I'm won't be running marathons (or at all), just need a general fitness tracker.

Very accurate. Mine is probably correct to the nearest ten minutes. You tell it when you fall asleep because it tries to set goals for you. In theory it would be useful if the app was more well flushed out, but honestly, my S9 does a better job than any Garmin I've ever owned.

I believe that the S9 has the same technology as the S5, so you should be good to go with that.

I'm not sure about falling asleep, but Fitbit wakeup time looks to be accurate to the minute, it's magic.

Can you tell if daily HR has a big impact on battery and if there are watch faces that show live HR

I think it's reasonably accute. S5 and S3F will give you a bit more info than Spartans or SO because they use Sleep Quality https://www.firstbeat.com/en/consumer-product/suunto/suunto-5/ BR

Unlike what other people are saying, mine has never been much good. If it takes me awhile to fall asleep, or if I don't get up right when I wake up, it'll assume I'm sleeping when I'm not. And not just for a couple minutes. Sometimes it'll say I was asleep for a couple hours where I was actually reading.

Most people are in fact saying that.

I've used 3 or 4 sleep trackers. Suunto 3 Fitness is by far the least reliable. If sleep tracking was a primary use case for a fitness watch person I could not recommend Suunto. Misses start and awake times 7 nights out of 10 by a solid 15-30 minutes.

I think you made a good choice. I had a Ambit 3 Sport for years and loved it, but upgraded to the Spartan Trainer Wrist HR and it’s shit. Always shows longer distance then the run actually was and the elevation is atrocious. A few weeks ago I did 85 miles on the Appalachian Trail over the course of 3 days and at the end my Spartan said I did around 152 miles. I think Garmin will be my next choice too.
