My brother tragically passed away a few days ago, GoFundMe is holding the funds and won’t respond to emails even though verification is in place.

META

Hi,

Sunday night I lost my brother after a long, hard battle with mentally health. He was 21 years old when he passed away, and my family started a GoFundMe to help with the costs of his funeral and any other costs moving forward.

I am not asking for money, I am not asking anyone to donate to his campaign. I am currently wondering about GoFundMe and their policies regarding withdrawals.

The original goal that my family had set was $7,500 which was surpassed in a single day. It is currently sitting at around $10,500. I went to withdraw the money today (his funeral is Friday) and it says:

“Your campaign is currently under review.”

I have sent an email to support yesterday, who said someone from the Community Management Team would be in touch within 24 hours. I have not heard anything from them.

In the GoFundMe page itself, I have included who I am, where the funds will be going (funeral cost) and I have linked an article verifying his passing. I have also verified my email address and phone number. It has been roughly 36 hours since I last heard from support and I am starting to get worried.

I don’t want to lose these funds, as the funeral and cremation are going to cost $12,500 together. I was trying everything I could to help my parents through this tragedy and I don’t want to tell them I lost all our money because of GoFundMe.

If there is anything I can do, anyone I can contact on Reddit, via email, text message, phone call... please help me. I just want to lay my brother to rest.

Yes, it’s been over 24 hours with no response and the account is still “under review.”

Sorry to hear that you're having issues. You have enough on your plate. I did get get payment withheld and I e-mailed their support and they responded within 48 hours. I guess my issue was straight forward, something had happened with their payment processor (WePay) but they sorted that out pretty quickly.

Was there any reason why it was being reviewed? Maybe they need more proof such as a death certificate? Unfortunately scammers ruin it for people in legitimate need.

This is the only response I’ve received:

“I'm very sorry for your loss. I promise to help in whatever way I can from this end.

I'll make sure our Community Management Team sees your reply; they don't offer 24 service like my department, but they'll be in contact soon.

I sincerely appreciate your patience while we keep GoFundMe the safest place to give.”

Still haven’t heard anything from this so called Community Management Team. There is $10,000+ sitting in the GoFundMe right now. There is an article from the local news linking his death with my GoFundMe (the news article shared the GoFundMe link...) and still nothing.
