Why has Cuba, alone in Latin America been able to resist US intervention?

Cuba seems to fit a common portrait of Latin American nations which the US intervened in one way or another. It is small geographically, limited resources and economy, has a left-wing government, and some relationship to the Soviet Union. Is there anything unique about Cuba which has allowed it independence from the United States?

Or is Cuba simply lucky?
