Need help setting up a server.

Help

Not sure if this is the right place to post, however I'm trying to setup a server for me and two friends to play on.

PC SPECS:

i5-4570

16GB RAM

Server is running on an SSD.

Broadband = 350/35

I have the server running, I have mods enabled (custom map and some npcs so far) that we want and it's joinable through the server manager on gmod.

The issue I'm having is that whenever you start spawning things in on Sandbox, it starts lagging hard, quickly. The server looks like it's idling through task manager and never ramps up, so it looks like it's not using all of the resources available.

I'm not sure what the problem is, can someone help? Do I need to provide more information?

EDIT: Is a GPU necessary? It's currently running on the iGPU.

  1. GPU is not needed
  2. Dedicated server is single-threaded, so it will never use more than 25% (on practice it is closer to 35%) of your cpu utilization. *
  3. If you spam the props - lag is an obvious consequence.
  4. If lag happens without spamming - launch the game on default map with no addons and try to play. If it runs smoothly - then you better add addons back one by one to find which one is causing lags.

* You have 4 core 4 thread cpu, but it happens that Source engine uses only one thread to do physics calculations, which are very, very common on sandbox servers, therefore you are always limited to 1-core speed. I host GMod sandbox server for a while, and my my i5-4440 does it pretty well. Unfortunately we are bound to 1 core performance as long as we are bound to Source engine. And yeah, task manager could show you that all 4 cores are utilized up to 25-30% - TASK MANAGER IS LYING for unknown reason. I dunno why I wrote this all, your case 99% is addon causing trouble, not a hardware limitation.
