It seems that Hand Cannons are grossly over represented in the game in terms of Exotic weapons and I for one would love to see the other weapon types get a bit more love. It seems like there's some sort of preference on Bungie's part for Hand Cannons and I wanna know why we keep getting new exotic ones.

Hand cannons are easy to romanticize. They're emblematic of a space Western, which is a significant part of Destiny's identity. Early on two of the most iconic exotic weapons were hand cannons, and it was a natural progression to thematically riff off them in the future.
We only have one exotic sidearm...
We only have a handful of Exotic ARs too, meanwhile we have like 6-7 Exotic Hand Cannons
I know I want Monte Carlo

Nah I want dragons breath
And ice breaker
Too strong I’d hate for them to bring it back and then nerf it

And I want the other d1 class specific exotic weapons we already have ace now we need the assault rifle and the scout
The warlock one was a beast
Last Word and Thorn are two exotics from D1 which are incredible and Crimson was an attempt at remaking an old exotic... Putting crimson aside I really enjoy last word and thorn. I think handcannons are just the best weapons in game and by the same ticket also the most popular. Appealing to the masses may be a reason for it.
A lot of the best and most popular weapons in D1 were hand cannons. Like Thorn, Ace of Spades, and the last word. So I guess they brought them back for nostalgia.
Handcannons have always been the iconic Destiny weapon. We're all basically space cowboys anyway.
Do you remember destiny 1. Everyone used shotguns and if they were using primary it was always a hand cannon. This is because people were grinding for range perks and in d2 the same. Exotic are mostly are not hand cannons check.. if probably the community that just like them better then the rest.
