2020 Summer internship advice

So this summer I am studying for the mcat and taking classes. I was in a car accident last October and started back walking fully in about February/march so I didn't really try to get anything this summer. But I emailed a doctor who happens to be a research mentor at a big university and told him about my research experience as an reu student the year before and related it some of his articles and to my surprise he emailed me back and told me to apply with him as my mentor and that he was looking forward to it. I was wondering should I like email him again when I'm applying in like august as in a "hey its me I just put in my application looking forward to you reading it" type of way or would that come off too clingy? I sound like I'm asking about a tinder hookup lol.

I don’t think it’s a big no-no to send that email, but I personally wouldn’t as long as you replied to him before, saying you plan to apply and look forward to the opportunity.

Did you reply to his email saying to put in an application?

I would first send that email saying you see that the applications are due in August and you’re excited for the opportunity and then in August I would send him a message when you submit/drop off the application saying how happy you are to be considered and that you submitted your applied.
