Kneeling and not kneeling are both speech, protected within US borders by the US First Amendment.
That has no relevance to anything, but if she were a right winger expressing some right wing thing, some of the same people protesting about her needing to be executed for treason or whatever, would decide that a soccer field (and social media) are effectively "the town square", and it is unconstitutional to suppress her speech there.

It’s definitely not overshadowing the team at all. A lot of the coverage is on Rapinoe anyway because she’s one of the best players (arguably tied with Morgan or Lloyd), and definitely the most consistent (maybe tied with Saurbrunn)... but they’ve been doing pieces on her upbringing, her fashion choices, her workouts... a ton of things besides her political views. And they’ve been doing interest pieces on all the ladies. I actually think this is one of the most balanced coverages they’ve had—in the past all the focus was on wambach or Morgan and now it’s more distributed. And they’re still kicking ass, so it is definitely not affecting anything on the fields

I listened to a radio documentary recently on women's football in Scotland and was blown away to discover it was banned on SFA grounds from 1921 until 1974. The national women's team played their first international in 1972. They had to make their own strip (someone knew someone worked in a shirt factory...) and had to borrow shorts from Rangers FC. One of their best players was sent away to a convent by her family to "get football out of her system". It was just extraordinary how they were treated.

Or even when Steve Kerr was told to stay in his lane when he spoke up on gun violence after a school shooting. Basically, women’s soccer in the us at the collegiate level got funding before the rest of the world. Other countries are starting to catch up now.

For a long time male athletes that would have participated in soccer in other countries instead became invested in basketball, football or baseball in the US. The programs for male soccer haven't been in place the way they are in the rest of the world. Girls growing up didn't have that same pressure to choose other sports, so girl athletes in the US were allowed to flourish. As a kid (I'm mid 30s now) I didn't know any other kids who played soccer, that's changing now, slowly, but most of my kids friends play soccer.

Title IX and no NFL/NBA/MLB/NHL to take athletes from the sport. The USA would likely be a mens soccer super power without those leagues.

It probably will! The '99 World Cup certainly inspired a lot of girls to start playing soccer in the US and women's soccer has grown so much since then. This World Cup was close to and breaking viewership records in several countries during the group stage and I'd imagine viewership will be high in the countries that have teams playing in the semi finals and finals. There's been a lot of excitement so far too, which I think will probably translate to more girls playing (it makes me want to start playing soccer again, and I'm 24 lol).
I'm hoping that the fact that several of the games have been sold out this year, along with TV/streaming viewership will help teams get more equitable pay, since clearly people are into women's soccer. Also, the US women's team has been bringing in more revenue than the men the past couple of years.
Yeah, I've always found it weird how disappointing the US men's soccer team usually is, since we have a good amount of youth programs and clubs.
And I love the US women's hockey team (and the Canadian women's players when they're not playing the US lol)

As much as we're talking about imbalance here, most of the reason for that is that the US actually forks out funding for women's sports development. Do does Canada and a handful of other countries.
But as far as team sports go, this funding can be very limited in other parts of the world. This is why International Women's Hockey is pretty well always going to go to Canada, USA, and Finland presently, with a few other Northern European countries who have some degree of contention.
But everywhere supports men's team sports, and has for quite some time, the infrastructure for finding young talent, nourishing it, developing it into international teams is there for men. Largely it isn't there for women in the same way.
The same amount that took off their shirts and ran around in sports bras after a win several years back 😂😂
