July 2019 Contest: Jesse Marunde Memorial Squat Challenge

Subreddit Contest

At precisely 13 hours and 4 minutes into the first day of the month, here's the July contest!

We've done this in some form every July since 2013 to honor the late Jesse Marunde, USA strongman who placed 2nd in WSM in 2005, and who was notorious for his "SQUAT MORE" mantra and his nasty 20 rep squat sets. Jesse died of a genetic heart failure on July 25th, 2007, during a training session in Sequim, WA. While I didn't know Jesse personally, the Sequim Strongman Crew was the group that loaned my university the strongman equipment that we all started on, I've competed in Sequim at contests put on by Jesse's former friends and training partners, and been around people who knew him. It's clear he is greatly missed, had a great effect on the community, and the Sequim Crew is carrying on his legacy.

RULES

  • Contest ends July 31st

  • Tell us your bodyweight when you post the video. Scoring by Wilks multiplied by number of reps. Don't be a bozo and try to game this by going heavier for 10 reps. The spirit of the contest is as heavy as you can go for 20 reps. The Wilks x reps multiplier is for people who fail or miscount and end up with 17-19 reps, not people who try to jack up their score by doing a 12RM.

  • Squat to parallel and try to make this clear from the video. I have better things to do than nitpick your depth, so just do a good job in the spirit of the contest. Again, this is a random-prize memorial contest--if you're going to cheat this you have way bigger problems than we can help with.

  • Sleeves OK, no wraps

  • I'm not adjusting scores, but you can use barbell, Buffalo bar, axle, SSB, or front squat, as long as you hit parallel and do 20 reps. We just want to see some heavy, high-rep, painful squatting.

This contest is sponsored by Kalle Beck and Starting Strongman! Kalle will send a grip shirt to the lucky winner of the random prize draw. Not only can you read strongman news, free training blog articles, and purchase ebooks at Starting Strongman, you can also get Kalle's expert advice in the form of training templates and 1-on-1 online coaching.

#Happy squatting.
