Nice. I had a 91 SR5 V6 5spd ext cab 4x4. Sold it about 10 years ago or so. Was such a fun truck.
This is also a 91 sr5 but the 3.0 got ripped out so I could shoehorn a Lexus 1uzfe v8 in place! Scoots it around pretty good.
That’s rad.
Yah I bet! I almost swapped in the 3.4L out of a Tacoma. Had a nice low mileage one that I picked up cheap but didn’t have the funds at the time to complete.
Yeah it made the truck a blast to drive. The sound alone made the swap worth it. I lucked out and scored a free parts car so it helped kickstart the process. My first swap so it took a few years to get the engine portion sorted. Drove it for 3 months and made sure it all worked, then tore it down to “semi restore” it.
What year/model is this? It looks like the truck my dad used to have it was an older toyota
91 Tacoma sr5
Close. It’s a 91 pickup sr5 4x4. Tacoma began production for model year 1995.5
You're right. In my head I was thinking 99
Thank you guys 👍🏻 i looked up some pics and it doesnt seem to be the one he had but looks pretty similar
Are you doing this in your own garage ? What kind of mask do you have?
I’m using a respirator. Using a few fans to provide airflow. Also covering all my skin and wearing safety goggles to protect myself.
All in my dirty garage!
Make sure fans are inlet only. Don’t want to run fumes through open coil fans.
My favorite Toyota body style. Love the color too.
Congrats! Is that royal blue the final color?
Thanks! The colour is rustoleum metallic blue. Doing it all out of a spray can then going over it with 2k clear.
Unconventional but I’ve had super good results with this method.
I painted a pinto with a brush once ;-)
You could almost finger paint one of those lol
What does 2k clear mean? Is 2k a brand or a specification?
I’ve never really done paint before lol
2k stands for 2 part. You mix a catalyst to allow the product to cure. It’s the secret to make a home brew paintjob actually last and have protection from uv and chemicals like gas. I’m using a product from Spraymax that comes in a can, kinda expensive but it works really well.
It’s very toxic so ensure you wear appropriate PPE!
Oh that’s good to know. Does this mean you need a compressor and proper spray gun to apply it?
Good to see a fellow procrastinator getting the job done, tuff car my guy.
Thanks! I had some moments when I was digging dried mud out of the frame rails when I questioned the project. Glad I stayed with it. Don’t even wanna think of the hours I have into this thing! Should be fun once it’s “done”.
Look forward to seeing it all finished! All the effort will pay off in the end. :)
I sure hope so haha! I will post an updated photo once I made some more progress on it.
Man. I’ve always wanted to paint my car in my garage. This is awesome. Please post the finished product!

Lotta work for a Tacoma, but it still looks awesome
It’s got sentimental value to me. Was my first vehicle, bought it from my dad. I learned to wrench with this truck, met my wife because of the truck.. safe to say it’s not going anywhere!
Cool. It’s probally gonna look brand new when your done
Looking good!! What color are you doing?
Thanks! Colour is rustoleum metallic blue. Out of a rattle can.
If you have a nice air compressor you should get a cheap spray gun. You'll save money. Spray cans are expensive. Nice color though!! Honestly I've seen some spray paint jobs better than some maco ones
Oh I completely agree! I have a compressor but it’s pretty small, only 5 gallon. My garage doesn’t have 240v and my electrical panel is full. So this was keeping me from taking the plunge to upgrade everything so I can run a decent compressor.
I also didn’t think it was going to take so many cans of paint! But I think at this point I want to prove you can get amazing results out of a can .
Right on!!
Im so glad you took all of that stuff off of the truck instead of taping it off.
Could the bed have been removed from the frame? Or is that excessive
The bed and the cab were both taken off so I could repair and coat the frame and suspension. I’m too lazy to pull the bed again for paint! I’m to the point where I want it done so I can enjoy it for the last bit of summer. Planning on moving next spring so I don’t want to move it on a flatbed again!
