Range Equipment/Bags

What do you guys bring to the range? Do you pack everything into a rifle bag? Do you use a range bag? Backpack? Which ones? I just had my first range trip Friday night and the backpack I had kicking around needs to be replaced.

Any suggestions on what to bring to the range?

I got one of the Cabelas Extreme Range bags when it was on sale (I think it's on sale again right now).

It holds a ton of stuff and isn't too big. I can fit 4 boxes of 12 gauge with 8 boxes of 9mm inside the main pocket. My Eye Pro and Ear pro in one end pocket with my staple gun in the other. The 2 length wise pockets have pistol holders and can hold some magazines.

All in all for $50 it's pretty darn good. I don't like the backpack idea personally as it's annoying for me to have to dig around for things.

I have one of these:
https://www.osagerivergear.com/osage-river-range-bag.html

It's heavy duty, compartmentalized well for pistols + magazines and every section of the bag is lockable with a luggage style lock. I only have three pistols and I keep them all in this bag for storage and transport purposes. I put everything else I need at the range in it as well which usually includes:

  • tool kit
  • shooting mat (at the range I just use it to rest my guns)
  • eye/ear protection
  • gloves
  • targets (folded)
  • target accessories (stapler, tape, compact binoculars, measuring tape, range finder)
  • 3-4 different quick loaders
  • rag + lube

and I still have plenty of room to spare. Holds 14 pistol magazines (and you can also keep more, but they'd be loose). The main compartment can be split with an adjustable Velcro separator.

$75 CAD on Amazon.ca. I bought it for $60 CAD on sale.

I have one of these off Amazon. $30 and it's been meeting my needs.

It can fit a pistol case or a small ammo crate inside along with:

  • ear and eye protection

  • first aid kit

  • multitool

  • cleaning kit

  • targets

  • stapler

I've got room to spare for a good amount of ammo or other accessories that I may get in the future. It's also a relatively small bag which is great since I don't like lugging a ton of stuff or big bags around

being poor and cheap, I used a $20 tool box from I think home depot which I repurposed into a range "bag".

Large storage compartment and a top tray for small things and locks too.

It doesn't have extra split storage compartments, or any fancy soft cloth interior but it carries ammo, magazines and basic safety gear from my house to the range.

That's what I use. Holds everything I need and more.

Thanks for all of the responses! Definitely have some new ideas now.

Never would have thought about using a tool box to take gear to the range!

I personally like the Propper bag myself. It's not cheap and it's pretty huge, but it lets me cram everything I need and several other things I don't need into the bag. There's also bags from Esstac that are designed to hold an ammo can, so those are nice as well. My stance is bringing everything but the kitchen sink, so if you like to travel light or don't like bringing a wagon for all the crap you carry to the range (my range supplies the wagons for use), you might want something else.

for my handguns, i have a cheap canadian tire hardcase that i stick in an old backpack. i stick the rest of my range stuff (eyes & ears etc.) in there. i used to also use a cheap plano case (also from Canadian tire) when i had only 1 rifle. i spent a bit more $ last year to get a nice big one to carry my rifles. will try to remember link when i get home.

I just use two plano field boxes one with ammo and one with accessories and a hard case with rifles and pistols in it

I use something very close to this bag. On one end is my earmuffs, the other are my binoculars. Front has my stapler (because most of the range ones are shit) and the inside contain my ammo and my benchrest stuff. Mine also has strings on the top, where I roll my targets and leave them in there.

Its big enough that weight becomes a problem before space.
