That’s wild, if people are gonna look at those stats and always mention them then why not give fox the award for most improved player? That’s a historic jump.
I think he had a really good case for it and so did voters since he was top 3 in the voting. What hurt him I think was that he was a second year player so people discounted his improvements a bit because you are supposed to improve as a second year player. I also think he was a bit overrated after his rookie year in the general consciousness, he was really bad his rookie year but I don't think people really acknowledged that because he showed some flashes and had some sweet highlights. I'd also say narrative has a lot bigger role in MIP than just raw stats and Siakam/Russell had a more compelling narrative since they moved to be big contributors on playoff teams. Personally I would have given it to Fox because even if you discount a bit of the jump because he was a second year player the jump was still massive.
RPM isn't really an outlier on this either basically all of the advanced stats showed a massive and unprecedented leap. PER (just as an example I think its the worst advanced stat) he went from 11.2 to 18.1 (15 is league average). WS/48 he went from -0.014 to +.106 and BPM he went from -4.4 to 1.1. The jump he made was truly massive in pretty much every way. I give a lot of credit to Fox but also modernizing the offense really helped him shine.
Fuck RPM except when it makes our guys look good then it’s a perfect stat
