We don’t call them Indians, just so you know. That’s an American thing.
First Nations or Indigenous People are usually acceptable.

What the story behind this ?
Canadians created reserves for the Mohawk tribe, a nomad people which historically moved a lot and had no permanent settlements. One of them is Kanesatake which is right next to the small town of Oka. Every now and then the town of Oka expands and creates new neighbourhood on lands the Mohawks claim to be theirs or sacred lands or ancestral burial grounds and it creates tensions. They have their own police “peacekeepers” and unless you go there to buy tax free cigarettes they have low tolerance for shenanigans. Who thought creating reserves from nomadic people would prove to be a problem? I guess every country has their dark history.
