Does anyone have a decent vertical panel setup using Gnome?

It surprises me that with widescreens and netbooks the vertical panel is not more commonly utilized. In Gnome it seems very few of the panel add-ons are compatible with a vertical panel in any practical sense. Anyone worked around this to their satisfaction?

I suppose if you used docbar(x), "main menu" instead of "menu bar", and switched out the standard Date/Clock/Weather applet for one that isn't so long, it could work out rather well.

Yeah, definitely use DockBarX it works great for vertical panels.

I agree with you OP. I think with how GUI design works, tall screen monitors would have been the way to go.

AWN is a great panel for vertical use.

Right click, click preferences. Orientation: Left or Right.

I tried that by using Drawers. Probably not the best solution, but it was okay.

I use a vertical bar/dock on win7 and osx and a horizontal one in ubuntu. Ever since I got used to the "disappear"-behavior the aspect ratio isn't that important anymore, it's more about "where do I put it so it doesn't appear unexpectedly"

I agree with you. Even KDE gets a little bizarro when you use a side/vertical panel, but it handles it better than Gnome right now, IMO.

With widescreen monitors, vertical space is at a premium -- one fun thing I've done (which I personally rather like) is to put a KDE panel on the right, make it fairly wide, and then put the Task Manager there (minimized windows)...which then makes the titles for your minimized windows show up in a very efficient "list" of sorts.
