Starting my first battlejacket - ordering patches

Hi all! After some time of really being into metal i wanted to make a battlejacket that will represent my charisma and music taste. Wanted to order about 10 patches (i only chose bands that really mean a lot to me) for a start and got into an argument with my dad. He says i should collect patches at show only - he thinks ordering online is cheating. Never heard of this but is there any chance he's actually right? Please share your opinion on this
